Used in spells for peace in the home, Sandalwood is also the basic religious incense of India. As the package modestly states, Mysore Sughandi Chandan Dhoop is "highly recommended for all religious ceremonies and social functions." Sandalwood, or chandan, is cooling, and considered to be of the padma (lotus) group and attributed to Amitabha Buddha. Sandalwood scent is believed to transform one's desires and maintain a person's alertness while in meditation. Sandalwood is also one of the more popular scents used for incense used when offering incense to the Buddha. Sandalwood smells somewhat like other wood scents, except it has a bright and fresh edge with few natural analogues. Its sedative property clears stress from the nervous system. Called Chandana, Rakta or Raktachandana, Red Sandalwood, and Santalum Album. Chandan belongs to the family Santalaceae. The sandal tree grows almost exclusively in the forests of Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, Timor Islands, and Indonesia. According to traditional Ayurvedic sources, Chandan dispels nervousness, cooling, clears depression, relaxes headache, lessens insomnia, reduces stomach pains, helps urinary troubles, relieves Pitta heat conditions, sunburn, acne, rashes, fevers, herpes, sores, ulcers, pitta, heat, calming, helps sleep, and centers the mind.
